With evidence of both Pre-Roman and Roman settlers, the area of Harpenden has clearly been settled for a long time. A stone sarcophagus was discovered in the 1820's, it is believed to be of Romano-Celtic origin and contained five objects dating back to 150AD. 13th century Harpenden was mostly woodland with many cleared spots called 'Ends' or 'Greens that contained small hamlets.
